HDHC 2 – 8 Doncaster
Huddersfield had the worst possible final match before the long Christmas break, they now have to wait until January 16th to put right an 8-2 thrashing from an albeit much changed Doncaster side who they had beaten 2-0 earlier in the season.
Huddersfield started well and dominated possession in the early stages, but found that the Doncaster keeper was in the right place every time, until an excellent passing move left him stranded allowing Jimmy Swinden to tap the ball into the empty net for a one nil lead. Unfortunately it went downhill from here as Doncaster hit three goals in quick succession to stun Huddersfield and leave the team wondering what had gone wrong.
Huddersfield started the second half with much more purpose and when Rob Kelly burst from midfield and found himself one on one with the keeper who brought him down they had the chance to get themselves right back in the game. However Mark Swinden’s penalty was saved and to add insult to injury Doncaster furthered their lead when their forward dribbled around 3 players and then the keeper. Jimmy Swinden made it 4 – 2 with a deft touch over the keeper but despite numerous chances this was the last time Huddersfield found the net.
Mark Swinden’s frustrations boiled over and he found himself in the sin bin as defensively things went from bad to worse, with Doncaster adding four more second half goals. There were flashes of excellent play as Huddersfield put together some of their best passing moves when the game was lost, man of the match Fergal Keaveney at the heart of everything but there was no end product, whilst at the other end they couldn’t keep the ball out of the net.
Man of match – Fergal Keaveney
Fool of day – Mark Swinden
Goal(s) – Swinden J(2)
