Ladies 3XI (A) City of York 05/12/2009

City of York 2 – 1 HDHC

Huddersfield Dragons ladies 3rd team didn’t get off to a good start in this match after having trouble locating the York pitch and subsequently no time to warm up.  The York side put the pressure on from the start and the dragons just couldn’t seem to produce their usual standard of hockey.  The home team took the lead after a good strike, from their second penalty corner, hit the backboard.  Dragons defence battled hard for the rest of the half, with any chance of attacking quickly snuffed out by a more eager and energetic York side.

After halftime the game became a little more even, but any attempts to attack by the dragons were quickly followed by a counter attack from the home side who seemed to always outnumber the Huddersfield defence.  It was on one of these occasions that they added to their lead to make it 2-0.  Had it not been for numerous good saves from keeper Martin they would have certainly added more to their tally.  To add to Dragons misery, they failed to convert a penalty flick, given when ball was stopped on the goal line by a York player’s foot.  Frustratingly the ball had been put in the back of the net, after it struck the foot but unfortunately the umpire had blown for a flick and despite protests, that the ball went in as she blew, she was not prepared to change her decision.  Dragons continued to battle but still were not playing to their full potential, although man of the match Fielding worked tirelessly in midfield.  In the dying minutes, with most of the team on the attack Huddersfield managed to take a consolation goal but it wasn’t enough to get them any points.
