Gateshead 6 – 4 HDHC
Another trip up to the North East for the Men’s 1XI and unfortunately another loss. Huddersfield were out of the blocks quickly and soon found themselves 2-0 up after some excellent play which resulted in a short corner and nice flick over the keeper from Man of the Match David Pemberton. This was swiftly followed by a goal from open play which was the result of some excellent interplay and a cool finish from top goal scorer Jimmy Swinden.
Huddersfield were not quite as clinical after this impressive first ten minute spell and several chances were missed whilst Gateshead began to apply more pressure up front. Gateshead scored three goals in quick succession as their pressure paid off and they forced Huddersfield into errors. The Dragons found themselves 3-2 down at half time and knowing that they could easily be up in this tightly contested game if they had taken all their chances and went out into the second half confident of being able to turn things around and gain their first victory this season in the North East.
However more of the same followed as Huddersfield continued to waste their good opportunities and Gateshead scored two further goals in quick succession before Huddersfield managed to score their third and Pembertons second to keep them in the hunt.
This was soon quashed as yet again errors from Huddersfield resulted in Gatesheads sixth goal, despite Huddersfield being 6-3 down with a few minutes left of the game they did not give up and managed to win a short corner where Fergal Keaveney and Craig Foster combined well to score their fourth.
A disappointing result but a good team performance from which lessons can be learnt and taken into next weeks game against top of the table Sheffield Hallam 2XI.
