HDHC 6 – 8 Leeds University
In an end to end thriller Huddersfield failed to take any points from this important league match. A young, fit Leeds outfit came out quickly and look organised from the start whereas the Dragons took a good ten minutes to find their formation.
Leeds took advantage of Huddersfield’s sluggish start and put away four goals in quick succession. This seemed to rile the dragons and they responded with a well worked goal passed out of defence from Linda Stacey to Sarah Walters in the middle of the field and up to Liz Green who selflessly passed the ball to joint player of the match Lisa Middleton who slotted the ball home. Green was next to add to the tally and the Dragons looked like they were on a come back. Walters added the third goal finding herself free at the top of the D and putting the ball away in the top corner. Leeds added one more before half time to take them into the break with a two goal advantage.
A rallying half time team talk saw the Dragons come out fighting but Leeds were not finished and added two more through well worked short corners. Rebecca Hargreaves scored an excellent ‘solo run’ goal, cutting through the Leeds defence and slotting the ball home. Middleton and Green added one more a piece but it was not to be for the home side as Leeds added their final two to take the victory. Strong defence from Lucy Tootell earned her joint player of the match.
