HDHC 8 – 6 Northumbria St Georges
Huddersfield won their third successive home game against Northumbria St Georges, who started the day in fifth place one point ahead of Huddersfield. As with so many of their games this season it was a game of two very different halves. Huddersfield started at a terrific pace and Northumbria couldn’t handle the pace and movement which led to Jimmy Swinden tapping in a rebound after a save from the keeper and then an excellent passing move ending with Swinden providing the finish for 2-0. Northumbria hit back for 2-1 but then Huddersfield punished them with goals from Foster and Pemberton provided by Swinden who then completed his first half hat trick to make it 5-1. The last word of the half went to Northumbria who capitalised on a lapse in the Huddersfield midfield to make it 5-2 at half time.
Northumbria buoyed by their late first half strike pushed much higher in the second half and had Huddersfield in trouble, who lost their clinical edge up front seeing a number of chances going begging. Two quick goals got Northumbria right back in it at 5-4 and with Huddersfield struggling to get some control on what was becoming an end to end game it could have gone either way from this point. However they did assert themselves in midfield once more and with Captain Kelly playing out of position at the centre of defence they begun to win some balls and hit Northumbria on the break.
Keaveney scored after some tricky dribbling and then his shot was poked home by Man of the Match Jimmy Swinden for his fourth and Huddersfield’s seventh, Northumbria got their fifth but then the match was put of out of reach when Huddersfield broke in numbers and a sweeping passing move ended with Courtney scoring past the stranded keeper. Northumbria added a consolation but too late to change the result with Huddersfield recording their fifth win from 8 games.
Next Huddersfield Dragons travel to Gateshead in search of their first points in the North East having returned empty handed from Durham and Whitley Bay already this season.
