Doncaster 0 – 2 HDHC
Huddersfield Mens 1st XI got their first ever North League Division 2 East campaign underway on Saturday with a hard fought but convincing 2-0 victory. Doncaster 2nd XI were relegated from North Division 1 last year and the away trip for Huddersfield was always going to be a good test of whether they could step up a level this season. A new formation has taken time to bed in during a tricky pre season that involved some tough tests against higher level opposition and only one victory.
Huddersfield were not found wanting as they matched Doncaster for effort and ability. Whilst Doncaster were strong in possession in the middle they lacked a cutting edge up front and also looked vulnerable to Huddersfield pressure at the back. That pressure told when the lively Foster broke into the D and at the second attempt picked out Hirst in the middle who lifted the ball over the keeper from close range. Huddersfield never looked in danger although possession was shared evenly with the only Huddersfield fault being occasionally getting caught in possession on occasion.
In the second half the game became more spread with Huddersfield creating a number of chances that they couldn’t convert. Foster was close on two occasions and the Doncaster keeper strong on a number of others. The Huddersfield defence were very strong throughout with strong tackling from all parts and excellent distribution from Man of the Match Mark Swinden. Just as Huddersfield needed to put the game to bed Lovatt came up with a superb drag flick from a short corner to settle any nerves with 15 minutes to go. However this led to Doncaster best spell, a player from each side went in the sin bin for an altercation and then Huddersfield went down to nine men as Doncaster won a penalty which smashed into the cross bar and just as both teams came back to full strength a Doncaster forward found himself one on one with the keeper but blazed over the bar to leave Huddersfield with their first North league win and a clean sheet.
Man of match – Mark Swinden
Fool of day – James Dobson
Goal(s) – Hirst, Lovatt
