City of York 2 – 2 HDHC
Huddersfield went to York hoping to start the season in better shape than 12 months ago. With promotion gained last season it was vital that it was best foot forward from the off for the Dragons.
With the above forming the basis of the Dragons pre match team talk it was almost fitting that it was York that struck first, a lack of concentration from the midfield and defence left a gaping hole down the middle of the pitch that York emphatically exploited. Dragons took heed of the warning and within ten minutes were back on even terms, a well worked penalty corner routine, finished off by a crisp strike from Haigh (E).
Huddersfield’s confidence built and York looked increasingly fragile at the back. The third goal of the game came after a patient build up from Haigh (E) and Foster before the ball was centred and finished past the keepers outstretched left hand by Elson. The Dragons could have gone on and got a third and only good defending and goalkeeping prevented them. With only 10 minutes left in the game York secured a draw, somewhat against the run of play. A strike from the right handside of the ‘D’ beating the left foot of Cowden.
HDHC came away from York with mixed feelings, a point in the first game of a new division cannot be bad but it also felt like two points dropped.
Man of the match – Ed Shimmel
Fool of the day – Nicky Elson
Goal(s) – Haigh (E), Elson
