England women claim bronze

England’s women took bronze at the EuroHockey Nations Championships with a 2-1 win over Spain in Amstelveen. After losing their semi-final against Germany on a golden goal, England responded with a battling display in the bronze medal play-off. Goals in either half from Chloe Rogers and captain Kate Walsh won it, with Silvia Munoz getting one back to make it a nervous finish for England. Hosts the Netherlands took gold with a 3-2 victory over Germany in the final. Walsh said: “It wasn’t a great performance if I’m honest. It was probably our worst of the tournament and we made it tight for ourselves towards the end. “We’re pleased to have won the medal though; I think to have come out of this game without winning would have been devastating to us.” Head coach Danny Kerry agreed, saying: “It wasn’t a great team performance. We struggled to break down Spain and we were way off how we played against Germany in the semi final. “But it was a tough, tough game; it wasn’t pretty but the players stuck to the task and once we got our noses in front we were good enough to keep them there. “Overall, the players have applied themselves well for such a young side and they can look forward to some well earned rest now.”
